IVF treatment (in vitro fertilization) or Extracorporeal (outside the body) Fertilization

Fertilization in vitro (IVF) is the type of infertility treatment used when the ovum is fertilized outside of female body. Currently fertilization in vitro is the most efficient type of infertility treatment. If the semen's motility and morphology are normal (or close to normal) in regard to the number of sperm, than the conventional IVF method can be used for egg fertilization.

IVF treatment - Legal Aspect:

According to the Latvian legislation, the IVF treatment procedure may be performed for heterosexual couples, as well as single women under 49, using either the partner's sperm or sperm from a donor.

The IVF treatment procedure is only used at our clinic when the cause of infertility is:

  • endometriosis;
  • poor quality of sperm;
  • infertility with unknown etiology.

IVF treatment efficiency is depending on many factors, including the duration of infertility and the age of the woman. Thanks to IVF treatment method, individuals that are infertile are still able to have children and, after many years of use, we can assure that the children who are born with the help of the IVF treatment are not different in any way from children who were born naturally.

IVF treatment procedure

IVF treatment procedure requires the woman to undergo an ovarian stimulation course (10-12 days) with the help of FSH medicaments. During IVF treatment procedure, they also have to go to the US checkups 2 to 3 times. When the follicles reach 18-20 mm in size, a medicine for maturation of an egg cells will be prescribed, and the egg cell collection day will be planned. The collection process is performed under intravenous anesthesia. After the IVF treatment procedure, the collected egg cells will get placed into a special environment, and will be fertilized with sperm. Further embryo growth and division is observed, and on either the third or fifth day the placement of the embryo into the uterine cavity (embryo transfer) will take place.
